A client asked what they should tell their board about the first month. “They are listening” sounded expensive and difficult to put in meeting minutes. Fair enough.
So here is what listening looked like on a recent project: two meetings with residents, one site visit in the rain, a long read through the eligibility policy, and six conversations with people who had considered joining and hadn’t. We wrote down the questions in their words.
By the end of the month we had a short field report. It said who the site needed to serve, what they needed to understand, what the current material got wrong, and what we would make. It also said what we would leave out. The board could read it in fifteen minutes.
We do not leave a month blank and call it a philosophy. We leave the design blank while we fill in the context. A field at rest is doing something. So are we.
