A chamber music weekend / 2026
Lento
Listen a little longer.
A small music festival wanted to welcome people who didn’t already know what a string quartet was supposed to feel like.
What they came with
Lento had an adventurous programme and an audience that mostly knew one another. Its posters looked serious. Its booking page assumed you already understood the difference between the concerts. The organisers wanted to make room for first visits.
What we saw in the fallow
We sat through rehearsals and listened to the musicians introduce pieces to each other. Those informal descriptions were better invitations than the programme notes. One cellist described a work as “a long walk that briefly gets lost”. We kept that.
A note from the work
You don’t need to know the name to enjoy the sound.
— Ingrid & MateoWhat we made
An identity with a musical sense of space, a printed weekend guide, and a website that lets people enter by mood, length, or time of day. Each concert has a short listening note and practical information before the biography. The archive keeps the notes after the chairs are packed away.
What grew
For the first time, the printed guide ran out before the weekend ended. The organisers heard from visitors who had chosen a concert from a description instead of a composer’s name. Next year’s programme can grow from the same structure.
“It gave us permission to speak like people.”
Anouk, festival director
